Prepare for your Family Session

Please email me at liajayphoto@gmail.com if you have any questions

What should I expect for our Family sessions?

Right off the bat, you should expect a fun hour with your family. This means some typical poses (grandma loves those) but then hugs, playing, dancing, and quality time with the people you love.

Family sessions range from 1-1.5 hrs. More than that, the kids (or dad) may get tired.

With small children, expect them to be allowed to run, play, jump, hug, dance, and even be as silly as they please. I will not ask them to smile. I will not demand they listen to instructions. It’s a” no-pressure, come join the fun” party in the beautiful natural light of the outdoors.

Don’t worry if your kids aren’t interested in getting their photos taken. Allow them to be themselves. It’s best not to push them into saying “cheese” or forcing a pose. I would much rather capture them naturally. I’ll bring the prompts and plans. YOU are here to enjoy the time with your kids.

Expect many hugs!

What should we wear for our family session?

I always say it’s more about the smiles and the emotion than the clothing.

But if you still prefer to get a little fussed up, there’s no need to wear the same color t-shirt or clothing. Instead, for a fun idea, perhaps have everyone dress in similar shades of the same color. Or choose 3 or 4 colors that go well together. Fun example, navy, beige, gray, and white go beautifully. Or maybe fall tones. But overall, solids work best.

One thing I do NOT advise is overpowering loud prints, sequins, or anything neon. Prints tend to pull the attention away from your faces and expressions and add more confusion overall. Seriously! Solids do better. My best advice? Keep it simple!

Wear what you love or feel comfy in. It's NEVER about what you are wearing; it’s about the smile you are showing. Feel free to bring changes of clothing and accessories. And when in doubt, go simple! Jeans and t-shirts, bare feet, or a flowy summer dress are always perfect.

What Location and Time for Family sessions?

As a natural light photographer, I love to photograph families outside in natural light. The best time for a session is the “golden hour,” which is about 1-2 hours before sunset. The air looks better. Bright midday sunlight is not necessary, and in fact, it can be blinding! Cloudy days work out even better. Can’t make it work at the golden hour time? Before your session, we’ll agree on a location that will be perfect for the time you need for your session.

Do you prefer an urban feel? Lots of trees? Maybe your backyard. Just say so! I am happy to discuss and brimming with fun ideas to get you the perfect look.

Other fun ideas; I love old barns, trucks, trees, wooden bridges, brick walls, and anything with texture. If you have a suggestion for your location, let me know. Time allowed, I'll try to scope it out before. I like to try to plan family sessions during the last 1-2 hours before sunset. This is the best light and will be the most flattering for everyone. However, no worries. We can make any time work.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Once the deposit is sent, the date and time are set aside for you. Of course, life happens when you are planning. For bad weather, the session will be moved to the first date we are both available. No second deposit is needed.

For most other reasons, (most. Of course, reach out to me to discuss any issues) Otherwise, the deposit stays with the date.

To say Lia Jay is AWESOME is a total understatement. From booking the shoot, to picking outfits, to working around the weather, Lia was incredibly helpful and professional. Lia is not only super talented but she is so much fun to be around. We had the BEST time during the shoot. She did an incredible job of keeping our young children engaged and smiling while also capturing their personalities perfectly. The hardest part of the process for us was picking our favorite photos, as each picture is truly stunning.

We took family photos with our 3 kids age 4 & under which can be tough, but Lia was fabulous at keeping the kids excited & interested with her vivacious attitude and fun ideas! She captured the most beautiful poses as well as “real” life simple moments of cuddles. We will always cherish these photographs of moments we cannot get back in time!
